Outdoor Pursuits in Devon

The opportunities to enjoy outdoor pursuits in Devon are (very nearly) endless. Do you crave the chance to go canoeing, climbing or kayaking? Are you bananas about ballooning, dotty about driving, or do you rave about rowing? Then you’re in luck. There are outdoor pursuits to suit every taste and ability, so be sure to get an itinerary set up ready for your Devon adventure!

Of course, it helps that in Devon we have square mile upon square mile of thoroughly stunning and very varied outdoor space. Whether you need ocean, lake, river, cliff, hill, forest, field or trail to enjoy your chosen activity, Devon’s two coasts, two National Parks and everything in-between will provide you with the right conditions to take part.

Watersports

It’ll come as no surprise when we tell you that, in Devon, you can take part in pretty much any watersport that you can think of. Devon’s coastlines and rivers are put to good use by our highly trained experts and tutors, so whether you’re new to watersports or are a seasoned pro, you’ll find a great spot to show off your skills. World-famous for our surfing beaches (Croyde, Woolacombe and Saunton, to name just a few), our love of water and all the fun that can be had in it extends to kayaking, canoeing, rowing, windsurfing, coasteering, paddleboarding, kitesurfing … and much more.

Want to find out more about  watersports in Devon? Perhaps your heart lies in other outdoor pursuits, what about trying your hand at a spot of…

Climbing

High ropes, abseiling, tutored climbs, indoor climbing – we’ve got it all here in Devon. From experienced climbers to those wanting to try it out for the very first time, Devon is a great destination for anyone wanting to brave the walls and trees. The biggest indoor climbing wall in Britain can be found in Devon, but for those of you who want to try climbing something a little more natural, there are a number of attractions giving you that option.

Courses and trails

There’s something so freeing about setting out on a trail – whether that’s walking, bike or horse – and just following where it will take you. We’ve plenty of these across Devon, as well as brilliantly set up assault courses and adventure trails. Want to give it a go but don’t have your own bike or horse with you? No need to worry, there are plenty of places that will loan you all the equipment you need, plus helpful guides and tutors that can talk you through the routes.

Experiences

Ever wanted to fly over green hills, moorland and coast? Drive off-road? Take part in country pursuits like shooting? You can do it in Devon. Not only can you fulfil a lifelong ambition, but you can do so in stunning surroundings. Take a look at the full list below and prepare yourself for all the outdoor pursuits that Devon has to offer.

Did you know?

Research has shown that taking part in new experiences is good for mind, body and soul. Your brain health benefits from novel activities, and if they’re energetic your body will benefit too. And it’s been shown that families that enjoy new experiences together build bonds and memories that benefit them as a unit for a long time after. It isn’t just families that are catered for, stag and hen groups are also welcome to take part in these outdoor activities as are groups of colleagues on team building days. For those of you concerns because of you may have limited mobility, no need to worry, many of Devon’s attractions are inclusive and offer options for everyone, whatever their ability.
