Great Torrington
A friendly and welcoming town, Great Torrington has good local amenities, independent cafés and shops and is home to a regular market which brings people to the town every week. The town is built on the site of an ancient settlement above the River Torridge, giving incredible views across the countryside.
Great for exploring
Great Torrington is a great gateway town, giving you easy access to many of the villages and towns in the North Devon region via a network of walking and cycling routes, including the Tarka Trail, which follows the route taken by Tarka the Otter.
Rich local history
As you might expect from a town built on an ancient settlement, there is a plethora of local history to be found here, including connections to the English Civil War. One of the most important battles of the war, the Battle of Torrington, took place in 1646, marked the end of the Royalists hold on the west country.
While in Great Torrington, make sure to spend some time visiting the local arts centre where you can take part in arts and crafts workshops and if you're in the area, look out for the town's firework displays which are put on to mark important dates in the town's history.
