Shooting in Devon

Shooting is an age old sport that many people in more rural locations take up. There are lots of different practices and many centres and groups that cater for different types of shooting. Not all shooting is hunting down the local wildlife, many of the centres focus on indoor targets and clay shoots.

Regardless of which branch of the sport you are interested in, Devon is a ‘must visit’ county whether you already shoot or would just like to give it a go. The beautiful and varied landscape lends itself to the sport and, at the very least, will take you to some fantastically lovely places.

If you haven’t shot before and are curious, then why not have a go while you’re visiting Devon? – It is easy to find an attraction provider and the basic skills required are easy to pick up, though they will of course talk you through it and it is all completely safe. Although consistently mastering the skills may take a little longer than your holiday, you are guaranteed to have good friend, even if you don’t manage to hit anything! It is also great fun and it is rare that someone who tries the sport doesn’t want to continue.

For many people, Air rifles & pistols are the first introduction to shooting and Devon has a variety of indoor and outdoor facilities that can show you the ropes. These include more straightforward target ranges up to more complex set-ups that simulate hunting scenarios for you to choose from. Visitors to these ranges are welcome, though many may ask for ID before admittance and many will be able to offer coaching for beginners. We always recommend taking a look at what is available in your area and then contacting the centre directly to make sure they have availability on the days you’re in Devon.

One gun range in Devon that offers a range of experiences is Crackshot in Newton Abott. Choose from several ranges, different guns and what package and instruction you need. There are even options for the younger members of your party from 12 and above.

Don’t think we’re only here for the newbies, target rifle enthusiasts are also well catered for in Devon with a network of clubs across the county and several ranges that are open to the public and who also provide coaching and equipment.

Clay pigeon shooting is very popular and for anyone who wants to try a spot of shooting, they’re in the right place. Devon boasts some excellent shooting grounds, as well as other clay shooting opportunities. Visitors are welcome to give it a go and the clay grounds will have coaching facilities available if you book ahead and will provide all the equipment that you will need.

More experienced clay shots will enjoy the excitement of simulated game shooting using clays – excellent fun and a great way to hone your skills! You can also look forward to generous West Country hospitality as part of the package!

Shooting needn’t be a solitary practice, many centres offer group sessions for people who want to take part in team building exercises or want a slightly different hen or stag celebration. There are also sessions available to families who want to introduce their children to the sport. Do check with your local centre for their policy, as some have age limits.

If shooting live game is more your bag, it isn’t just clay pigeon shooting that is on offer. There are legal shoots taking place for game and the landscape, with its hills, valleys, woods and fields make it one of the best places in the world for deer stalking, game & rough shooting, and wildfowling.
