Bampton Charter Fair: A Historic Devon Tradition

Step into the heart of Mid Devon each October for the Bampton Charter Fair – one of the oldest and most vibrant traditional fairs in England. Set in the picturesque town of Bampton, this centuries-old celebration continues to captivate visitors with its unique blend of history, local culture, and entertainment.

The Historic Roots of Bampton Charter Fair

The Bampton Fair dates back over 800 years, making it one of the oldest surviving charter fairs in the UK.

A Royal Charter from 1258

While the fair was already active in the early 13th century, it was officially granted a royal charter by King Henry III on 14 June 1258. This allowed the rector of Bampton, Master Osmund, to hold an annual fair on the vigil, day, and morrow of St Luke’s Day (October 18th).

From Sheep to Ponies

Originally known as St Luke’s Fair, Bampton’s event was once the largest sheep fair in the West of England, with over 14,000 sheep sold in its 19th-century heyday. As livestock trading evolved, the focus shifted to Exmoor ponies and cart horses, leading to the rise of the Bampton Pony Fair in the late 1800s.

Today, while animal trading has faded, the fair thrives as a celebration of rural heritage, local enterprise, and community spirit.
