Welcome to Willand

Nestled in the scenic Culm Valley and just a stone’s throw from the stunning Blackdown Hills National Landscape, Willand is the kind of charming Devon village that makes you want to take a deep breath, put the kettle on, and maybe write poetry (or at least a delighted Instagram post).

Conveniently located just off the B3181 (the OG A38), Willand is easily accessed from both junctions 27 and 28 of the M5. You’ll also find Tiverton Parkway railway station just a few miles away, perfect for those arriving by train.

Fun & Quirky Willand Facts

  • Margaret Partridge, a trailblazer for women in electrical engineering and rural electrification, once called Willand home. Look out for the blue plaque marking her former residence – a quiet tribute to a woman who lit up Devon, literally.

  • Between 2015 and 2017, a scientific survey discovered that Willand was mysteriously rising by 2 cm per year. Is it tectonic activity? Alien experiments? A very slow inflatable? No one knows. But it’s cool.
  • A circular village walk known affectionately as “Around the World” takes you along the old railway line. A passport is not required.

Things to Do & Places to See

For the Adventurous

  • The National Cycle Route 3 (West Country Way) runs straight through Willand. Whether you’re pedalling from Bristol to Penzance or just out for a scenic spin, it’s a great route — and you can even hop off to explore the nearby Grand Western Canal.

For the History Buffs

  • Visit the 15th-century St Mary’s Church, built with classic red sandstone and home to a rood screen dating back to 1400 – one of the oldest in Devon! Want a peek inside? Keys are available at the post office (during shop hours, not midnight like in the movies).
