Lustleigh Cleave: Hidden Gorge of Dartmoor’s East Edge

Nestled between Lustleigh and Manaton in Dartmoor National Park, Lustleigh Cleave is a breathtaking, steep-sided valley carved out by the River Bovey. Stretching around 2 miles (3.2 km), it weaves through ancient deciduous woodland and heathland, offering a rich tapestry of mossy granite boulders, rapids, and wildlife-rich habitat.

Wild Woods, Wildlife & Water 

  • Ancient woodland & heath: Part of East Dartmoor National Nature Reserve, the valley floor hosts deciduous trees lush with moss, lichens, bluebells, and foxgloves in spring  

  • River Bovey charm: The peat-stained Bovey runs through the gorge, tumbling over rapids and granite clitter—set up for hikers to hop across mossy boulders at Horsham Steps  

  • Birdlife hotspot: Ideal for nature lovers—look for dippers, flycatchers, redstarts, cuckoos, and woodpeckers amid this lush habitat. 

Hunter’s Tor – Ancient Summit & Viewpoint 

Perched at around 320 m elevation, this tor crowns the ridge with impressive rock outcrops and an Iron Age hillfort featuring triple ramparts. Visitors today can soak in commanding views over the Bovey Valley and beyond
