Okehampton, Dartmoor – The Walking Centre of Devon

Set in the northern foothills of Dartmoor National Park, Okehampton is a lively market town steeped in history and surrounded by some of Devon’s most dramatic landscapes. Known as the walking centre of Devon, Okehampton is the perfect base for exploring Dartmoor’s moorland trails, wooded valleys and riverside paths.

A Town Rich in History

Okehampton’s story begins long before written records, with evidence of prehistoric settlements found in the surrounding hills. By Saxon times, the town had established itself as a small agricultural hub on the River Okement. Following the Norman Conquest, the powerful de Courtenay family built Okehampton Castle, which remains the largest in Devon and a defining feature of the town. Originally constructed as a motte-and-bailey fortress, it was later transformed into a luxurious residence during the medieval period, reflecting the wealth and influence of its owners.

Ruins of an ancient stone castle sit atop a grassy hill under a clear blue sky. Bare tree branches frame the scene, evoking a sense of history and solitude.

Gateway to Dartmoor Adventures

Okehampton is a paradise for walkers, cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts. The town is the starting point for the Two Moors Way and West Devon Way trails, with direct access to high moorland landscapes and iconic tors such as Yes Tor and High Willhays. Cycling fans can enjoy the Granite Way, a scenic route following a disused railway line through Dartmoor’s countryside.

Culture and Community

The Museum of Dartmoor Life offers a fascinating insight into the region’s past, while Okehampton’s thriving arts scene and regular events bring the community together. Annual festivals and music events add to the town’s welcoming character.

Victorian Arcade and Unique Shopping

At the heart of the town lies the Victorian Arcade, a beautifully restored shopping destination that captures Okehampton’s historic charm. The arcade is home to a selection of independent boutiques, artisan stores and speciality shops, making it a delightful spot to browse for gifts, crafts and locally made goods.

Beyond the Victorian Arcade, visitors can explore family-run stores, craft shops and weekly markets showcasing local produce. The town offers a range of dining options, from cosy tearooms and traditional pubs to restaurants serving fresh, seasonal Devon dishes.
