Discover Buckfastleigh: Gateway to Dartmoor

Welcome to Buckfastleigh

Tucked away on the southern edge of Dartmoor National Park, Buckfastleigh is one of Devon’s most characterful towns. With its historic abbey, steam railway, and wealth of natural beauty, the town is a magnet for visitors seeking both relaxation and adventure. Its riverside setting along the River Dart makes it a peaceful retreat, while its location offers easy access to Dartmoor’s dramatic landscapes and the wider South Devon coast.

Whether you are planning a short break, a family holiday, or a stop on a wider tour of Devon, Buckfastleigh has a special way of blending heritage, culture, and outdoor adventure.

History and Heritage of Buckfastleigh

Buckfastleigh has a story stretching back centuries. Once a thriving centre for the wool trade, the town later became known for quarrying and paper manufacturing. Today, its cobbled streets, old mills, and historic landmarks remind visitors of its industrious past.

Buckfast Abbey

The jewel in Buckfastleigh’s crown is Buckfast Abbey, a working Benedictine monastery with over 1,000 years of history. Rebuilt by monks in the early 20th century, the abbey church is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, with intricate stained-glass windows and an atmosphere of tranquillity. The grounds include award-winning gardens filled with medicinal herbs, aromatic plants, and reflective spaces. Visitors can also enjoy a traditional tearoom and a shop selling honey, tonic wine, and handmade products.

Outdoor Adventures Around Buckfastleigh

Dartmoor National Park

Buckfastleigh is an ideal base for exploring Dartmoor National Park. Just minutes from the town, the moor offers dramatic granite tors, wild ponies, and endless walking trails. Popular routes include gentle riverside strolls along the Dart, as well as more challenging hikes to iconic landmarks such as Haytor and Hound Tor.

River Dart Country Park

Families flock to the River Dart Country Park, a 90-acre adventure park set within beautiful woodland. With zip wires, climbing nets, water sports, and miles of nature trails, it is a fantastic place for outdoor fun.

Cycling and Walking Trails

The town is also surrounded by scenic cycling and walking routes. From quiet country lanes to challenging trails across the moors, the area offers plenty of opportunities to explore Devon’s countryside at your own pace.

And of course, Buckfastleigh is home to the famous Buckfast Tonic Wine, originally created by monks at the abbey. Though not produced locally today, it remains a unique part of the town’s identity.

South Devon Railway

The South Devon Railway is one of the town’s most popular attractions. This heritage steam railway runs for seven miles along the River Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes. Passengers can enjoy a nostalgic journey through rolling countryside, spotting wildlife along the way. The station at Buckfastleigh also houses a museum, model railway, and a well-stocked gift shop.

Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary and Butterfly Farm

Adjacent to the railway is the Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary and Butterfly Farm, a family-friendly attraction where visitors can observe otters playing, swimming, and feeding in natural enclosures. The butterfly farm offers a tropical experience, with colourful butterflies fluttering freely around exotic plants. This is a perfect stop for both children and nature lovers.
