Welcome to Tiverton – The Historic Heart of Mid Devon

Nestled where the Rivers Exe and Lowman meet, Tiverton is a thriving historic market town in Mid Devon, a brilliant base for exploring the South West’s rolling countryside, stately homes, and canal-side paths.

A Rich History Carved in Stone, Wool & Water

Tiverton’s story is as old as the hills — literally. Human activity in the area dates back to the Stone Age, with flint tools unearthed across the landscape. Overlooking the town is Cranmore Castle, an Iron Age hillfort, while Roman remains have been discovered nearby in Bolham.

Fast forward to 1106, and you’ll find the foundation of Tiverton Castle, built as a Norman motte and bailey under the orders of Henry I. Later, the town flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries, powered by the wool trade and the wealth of local merchants like John Greenway and Peter Blundell, who founded the prestigious Blundell’s School.

Through fire, civil war, and the Industrial Revolution, Tiverton has always bounced back, thanks in part to John Heathcoat, whose lace-making empire transformed the town in the 1800s. The arrival of the Grand Western Canal and Great Western Railway sealed Tiverton’s place as a centre of commerce and innovation.
