Rainy Days in North Devon

Despite having a fairly mild climate all year around, we can't always avoid the rain. Life in North Devon is fantastic when then sun shines, but don't worry though, there are plenty of things to keep you entertained when the weather turns against you. Whether you’re looking to fill half term holidays, a bank holiday weekend or simply need some ideas for rainy day activities for the kids, we’ve got some great tips, or maybe it’s you and some friends at a loose end and looking for some things to do when it rains.

Head to an award winning attraction

Take your pick from indoor attractions such as museumsaquariums and galleries, or if you’re feeling braver, there are climbing centres, trampolines, theme and adventure parks… The list is endless!

Many of the adventure parks and attractions in the region have all weather areas and plenty of things for the whole family to enjoy. The region isn’t just full of history and adventure activities to shield you from the rain, you can enjoy a whole range of workshops too. North Devon is known for being a haven for creative types and as such, you’ll find plenty of arts and crafts workshops and markets all over the region to help keep you busy.

Visit the shops

It’s not something that will appeal to everyone but with the huge amount of shopping opportunities in North Devon, those that do like to exercise their credit cards will have a great time avoiding the rain. As well as the high street areas in the towns of Bideford and Barnstaple, there are several under cover markets, many of which are located within historic Pannier markets, which have a range of different items, most of which are locally produced, for sale every day. Alternatively, for designer shopping, head to the outlet village or one of the larger shopping centres in the region and spend the day trying on fabulous new outfits or buying gifts for your favourite people.

Don’t forget, the rain is also an opportunity to enjoy a great meal in one of the fabulous restaurants that can be found in North Devon. Ilfracombe is quickly becoming known as a culinary hub with foodies heading there all year around, but wherever you are, you’ll find somewhere incredible to duck inside and fill up on seasonal, locally produced dishes. With the incredible gin being made in the Wolf Valley, the amazing sea food from the coast and the rare Ruby Red cattle that can be found in the region, you’re never too far from somewhere that offers an amazing meal. The great thing about heading to the shops of course, is that there are an abundance of eateries to be found in the high street, both chains and independents, offering all your family’s favourites.

Not too fussed about the rain?

North Devon is England’s Adventure coast so if you’re not too bothered by a bit of rain, get out there and have an adventure! The coastline is perfect for anyone who loves watersports, particularly around Croyde, Putsborough and Woolacombe, so grab a board and get out there! Otherwise, you can take a stroll around Exmoor or head along the Tarka Trail. It’ll make your rest stops all the more sweeter!

Whatever you fancy doing, North Devon is packed with things to do on a rainy day.
