Activities

Don’t let Sidmouth’s Regency charm lull you into a false sense of security, this little town has a lot going on. With an array of sporting and leisure activities suitable for the whole family, whatever your age and ability, to enjoy, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to finding things to do in Sidmouth.

Discover the great outdoors

Sidmouth’s location makes it the ideal place to visit for anyone who loves being outside. Not only does it fall along the UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic Coast with its many coastal walks, but it is also within the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty giving you plenty of opportunity to put on your walking boots and explore the various foot paths and cycle ways that can be found in this beautiful part of the county.

Around Sidmouth and the surrounding Sid Valley you’ll find a variety of walks and hikes as well as excellent cycle routes to enjoy whatever the weather.

You can find information on different walks in the area here and cycle trails here.

Make a splash

The coast brings thousands of watersports enthusiasts every year. Sidmouth has a proud history of sailing and tackling the waves along the Jurassic Coast. Boat races and the annual Regatta are a regular fixture on the town’s event calendars and bring people from all over the country to come and watch the competitors.

As well as being a haven for sailors and those that enjoy a spot of boating, in the summer, you can often see visitors enjoying the waves on kayaks, canoes or paddleboards. During the summer season, you can find a number of concession stands dotted along the seafront offering equipment hire and more giving you a chance to learn a new skill or to practice existing ones.

Not got your sea legs? Not to worry, there are still plenty of things for you to enjoy while visiting Sidmouth.

The region has a host of sporting and leisure activities available all year around. Try your hand at bowls or a round of golf for something gentle while still being active and social, or let your competitive side loose with a game of tennis. There are even opportunities to watch and play football and rugby and in the summer, enjoy a friendly game of cricket or two. Fishing is another popular activity in Sidmouth, head to Port Royal for some of the best fishing spots in the town.

Let the creative juices flow

It isn’t just sports fans that will love the activities and facilities on offer in Sidmouth, the town is well known for its creativity too. From regular theatre performances and workshops at the local theatre and other venues to arts and craft events, music events and activities and regular festivals and events that celebrate the arts in all their forms. Whatever your passion, you’ll find a way to live it while enjoying the beautiful surroundings of Sidmouth and the Jurassic Coast.

Accessibility

The people of Sidmouth are dedicated to making sure that every event, activity and attraction in the town is as inclusive as possible. The various organisations that look after the sporting activities or artistic workshops make sure that visitors with particular access requirements don’t have to feel left out.

The beach area has disabled access as does a number of the popular attractions, including venues and many of the workshops that are put on as part of regular festivals.

Whatever your age, ability or previous experience with an activity, whether it’s taking on a drama performance or tackling the waves on a kayak, you’ll find something that suits you here in Sidmouth.
