A linked exhibition is on show at Sidmouth Wallspace and Sidmouth’s telephone box art spaces the Micro Museums of Contemporary Art and Antiquities.
The CODEX Project is a collaboration with Sidmouth College students and Sidmouth School of Art, hosted by digital artist and teacher, Sam Eyre and printmaker, Emma Molony. Traditional and digital forms combine innovatively to express identity. The project takes inspiration from ‘The Thamesmead Codex’ by Bob & Roberta Smith and explore a range of techniques and including digital print, typography, photography and experimental printing using gelli plates.
The work explores identity, personal journeys and emotional wellbeing and through a collection of outcomes creates a visual conversation between the Sidmouth Wallspace and the Telephone Box Micro Museums giving a ‘voice’ to the young people of Sidmouth.
Renata Fry, Head of Art and Photography, Sidmouth College, commented: “It’s really important that art departments are engaging with artists within their local community, it’s important for students understanding the role of an artist and to see in terms of careers where they could go once their creative journey at Sidmouth is complete.”
CODEX Project Lead – Artist and Educationalist Sam Eyre said: “What’s really important for me as an artist and growing up in Sidmouth, is that you can’t turn young people into artists overnight, you can just literally open the door up to them through experiences like this, through the work that Sidmouth School of Art are doing."
