Bovey Tracey

Bovey Tracey is set in the heart of Devon and is one of the main gateway towns in Dartmoor with a unique number of visitor attractions and a mixture of shops. The town is built from Dartmoor Granite and has wonderful views of the River Bovey. It is where the Devon Guild of Craftsmen call home.

It is a beautiful and relaxing market town, it is on the fringes of one of Britain’s largest national parks giving visitor’s miles of undisturbed moorland to explore. There are plenty of opportunities to be active with walking trails and the chance to join guided walks across the moor. Bovey Tracey is a beautiful and welcoming market town where the winding streets and picturesque parks provide the perfect environment for relaxation. The town is home to many restaurants, bars, coffee shops and attractions, each designed to assist those who wish to take time out and unwind.

Local attractions include the House of Marbles and the National Trust’s Parke Estate. There is a Farmers’ Market which sells local produce.

There is a long and colourful history at Bovey Tracey, with the town having taken its name from the River Bovey and the Lord of the Manor, De Tracey. One of the De Tracey family was involved in the murder of Thomas Becket.

The Riverside Mill building in the centre of the town is home to the Devon Guild of Craftsmen. The building was never used as a mill, despite the name, it was initially built as a stable and the waterwheel was used to collect water for the stable and nearby buildings to use. Market Cross is a war memorial and the Town Hall, which was built on the original site of the village green are also places with an interesting history. Nearby is Parke, the headquarters of the Dartmoor National Park, the house and estate was left to the National Trust and is now a tourist attraction. Nearby is also the Home Farm Cafe which is well worth a visit.

Bovey Tracey is a fascinating place for anyone interested in history and crafts, as there is an emphasis on creativity and craft work.  There are number of events and attractions around the town that cement it as a creative hub.
