Discover Postbridge – Heart of Dartmoor’s Wild Beauty
Situated in the very centre of Dartmoor National Park, Postbridge is a small yet captivating village best known for its ancient clapper bridge. Surrounded by vast moorland, granite tors, and crystal-clear rivers, Postbridge offers visitors an authentic taste of Dartmoor’s rugged charm and prehistoric past.
Postbridge’s Famous Clapper Bridge
The clapper bridge in Postbridge is one of Dartmoor’s most iconic landmarks, drawing visitors from around the world to admire its simple yet remarkable construction. Believed to date back to the 13th century, it was built from massive granite slabs laid across stone piers to help packhorses and traders cross the East Dart River safely.
Each slab can weigh several tonnes, a testament to the skill and determination of the people who built it. The bridge is still in excellent condition today, despite centuries of weathering by Dartmoor’s wild elements.

Gateway to Dartmoor’s Moorland Walks
From Postbridge, visitors can explore some of Dartmoor’s best walking trails. Routes range from leisurely riverside strolls to challenging treks across open moorland. Highlights include walks to Bellever Tor, with its panoramic views, and Laughter Tor, offering a peaceful escape into nature. The area is also a prime spot for wildlife watching, with Dartmoor ponies often grazing nearby.
A Centre for Prehistoric Discovery
Postbridge is surrounded by some of Dartmoor’s most important archaeological sites, including Bronze Age hut circles, stone rows, and ancient burial mounds. The Dartmoor National Park Visitor Centre in Postbridge offers exhibitions and interactive displays to help visitors uncover the area’s fascinating history.
