While there are plenty of things to see and do while in Budleigh Salterton, one of our favourite activities is visiting the Pebblebed Heaths, a conservation area on the outskirts of the town.
As one of the best loved conservation sites in Europe, a day out on the heaths is always something special and in an area full of exciting geological sites, its one not to be missed. The Pebblebed Heaths date back 180 million years – much like the Jurassic Coast itself and features a host of walks and trails, all of which feature beautiful views and plenty of places to see the changing seasons.
Part of the site covers the Otter Estuary, which runs alongside Budleigh Salterton. This walk along the Otter is one of the most popular walking routes in the region and is one we love to follow during this time of year, because you can see the leaves start to change from green to orange and red.
Other popular routes around the Pebblebed Heaths include Woodbury Castle, which is a little further away from Budleigh Salterton, but within easy reach. The castle’s ramparts and ditch are still recognisable today, despite being thousands of years old – having been built in the Iron Ages.
Wherever you choose to visit while at the Pebblebed Heaths, just remember to stick to the paths so as not to disrupt any wildlife (there are over 100 species of bird that call the heath home!); don’t climb the castle and don’t camp or light any fires. Dogs are welcome to join you on your adventures around the Pebblebed Heath, but please do follow the dog code:
- Walk no more than 6 dogs at a time
- Read and follow all signage
- Do not allow your dog to disturb wildlife or livestock
- Always pick up after them
- Keep them in sight at all times and if their recall isn’t good, keep them on a lead
The Heaths are also a great location for cycling, mountain biking or horse riding – so if you’re staying in Budleigh Salterton and you fancy a day out in beautiful surroundings, getting a taste of autumn, the Pebblebed Heaths are a great choice.
The Pebblebed Heaths are under 10 minutes away from the town centre by car, alternatively, you can cycle there in around 20 minutes, or if you feel up to the challenge, you can walk there in just over an hour. Buses will also take you part of the way, so make sure to pick up a map or check your route before you head out.
