Rockpooling is one of our favourite activities at this time of year when the beach is quieter. It’s a great way to learn about the UK’s marine wildlife and it’s a great way to get out and about without breaking the bank. All you need is a bucket and a bit of curiosity!
Here’s our guide to rockpooling while in East Devon.
What you will need:
Clear jar, bucket or other receptacle to dip into the pool
Appropriate clothing for the weather
Sturdy shoes
If you can avoid it, don’t use nets, as small creatures can get tangled and hurt in nets.
Where to look:
You’ll find rockpools over most of the beaches in and around Budleigh. This part of Devon is famous for being rocky and you’ll find not only sea creatures but also fossils while you’re searching! The best time to head out is when the tide is out, once on the beach, go towards the pools closest to the sea, as this is where most of the creatures will have ended up. Just be careful not to approach them too noisily and try not to cast a shadow, as anything in the pool will hide from you.
What you might find:
Like we said, you can often find fossils, as well as interesting pebbles and shells in rock pools, but you’ll also see crabs, sea slugs, star fish and lumpsuckers, among other small fish.
Just remember to put everyone back where you found them.
As always while exploring the coast, make sure to be aware of your surroundings. This time of year, the rocks can be very slippery and the weather can be changeable, so please don’t stray too close to cliffs or large rocks if there are storms or heavy rain and wind forecast. The best rockpools will be those closest to the sea, so make sure to keep an eye on the tide timetable so you don’t get caught out.
It is a good idea to go out in groups or if you’re heading out alone, to let someone know where you are going and what time you expect to be back and to always dress appropriately for the weather. We want everyone to have fun and to stay safe while doing it!
