Welcome to the Bedford Hotel, one of Sidmouth’s finest regency buildings. With a fascinating history, comfortable and stylish accommodation and a friendly atmosphere, this beautiful family run hotel is a wonderful base for your stay in the Sid Valley.
With incredible views of the Lyme Bay and the iconic Jurassic Coast, the Bedford Hotel has forty bedrooms, many of which include balconies and a premier view of the sea. Each of the rooms have been tastefully decorated and modernised while keeping their traditional, Regency feel. Guests can take advantage of the ensuite facilities and the individual room’s luxury amenities, which include flat screen televisions with freeview, hair dryers, telephones and complimentary hospitality trays. This is as well as the hotel’s communal areas, where guests can enjoy our relaxing lounges and dining areas, ideal for indulging in the best local produce Devon has to offer in comfortable and attractive surroundings.
The hotel is centrally heated throughout and there is lift access to both floors. At the Bedford Hotel, we put the comfort of our guests first, so if you have any special or additional requirements, do let us know at booking and we can make your stay as special as possible. Not only that, but the Bedford Hotel is a dog friendly hotel, where as many hotels frown upon your pups running around the hallways, even the dog friendly ones, the Bedford is a genuinely dog friendly environment. We believe your dog should have as lovely a time on holiday as you, which is why we offer you both a VIP welcome when you stay with us. In lieu of chocolate on the pillow, dogs receive a complimentary dog treat on arrival and with the huge array of excellent dog walking locations around the hotel, including the seafront, the Byes and the Salcombe Hill area. Many of the region’s top attractions are also welcoming of dogs making this a great option for your dog friendly holiday.
Sidmouth is a beautiful coastal town with plenty to see and do, whatever your age or budget. The town is located along the stunning Jurassic Coast and the hotel is ideally placed for exploring the seafront, the town’s numerous gardens and abundant independent shops.
The Bedford Hotel has a fascinating history and everywhere you look you will see traditional Victorian charm combined with modern comforts. Initially, the hotel was one of the first Regency houses to be built on Sidmouth’s seafront and originally housed Wallis’ Marine Library and Reading Room owned by a John Wallis, a game maker and printer. It was a popular meeting place for London’s elite in the early 20th century and much like today, had plenty of space for lounging, meeting and talking. That’s not where the hotel’s interesting history ends, in 1815, the HMS Bellerophon passed through Sidmouth with a certain Napoleon on board. The crew ended up taking all of John Wallis’ hire telescopes, with Napoleon eventually being transferred to HMS Northumberland at Torquay.
Following that, the building was enlarged and became a hotel in 1865 and has been the Bedford Hotel ever since. These days, the hotel is owned by the Pyne family, who are from South Farm in nearby Budleigh Salterton.
