There’s plenty to get excited about in May – there are two bank holidays and the start of Whit Week to celebrate but for us in Sidmouth, perhaps the most important date in May is the 8th.
May 8th is World Donkey Day and as a whole host of rescued donkeys call Sidmouth home, there is no better place to mark the occasion. World Donkey Day is acknowledged every year to recognise the important role that donkeys have, and continued to play, in agriculture, transportation and therapy. Despite the huge contribution that donkeys make in every day life, they are often mistreated and exploited, which is where the Donkey Sanctuary and World Donkey Day come in. If you’re in Sidmouth, stop off at the sanctuary and learn more about these fascinating creatures.
There’s a lot more to donkeys than you might think, for instance, did you know that donkeys are really hygienic? They will refuse to drink water if they don’t think it is clean and they love to keep themselves and their friends clean by grooming each other constantly. They’re also incredibly social animals and can become lonely and depressed if left on their own. Their memories are so good they can remember places they have been before and can recognise people and other donkeys, even if they haven’t seen them for years. Basically, donkeys are kind of incredible!
Not able to make it to Sidmouth for World Donkey Day? Don’t worry, there are plenty of opportunities to visit them – the sanctuary is open every day from 9am – 5pm and is free to visit – you can even bring your dogs!
Why not make a weekend of it? You can find great places to stay around Sidmouth here.
