Now that the school holidays are over, it’s the perfect time for empty nesters to head out and enjoy the Jurassic Coast before the autumn and winter months really set in. Across Sidmouth there are some lovely places to stay, from grand Regency hotels to cute, cosy cottages perfect a couple’s getaway.

If you don’t have children, or the kids are old enough not to worry about, now is the perfect time to enjoy a short break. The weather is (reasonably) ok in September and with the season not quite over, there are still plenty of attractions and activities to keep you entertained. Plus, towards the end of the month, more beaches open up, providing you with some more exciting dog walking opportunities!

For a stay with every luxury taken care of, check out the Victoria Hotel. Located in an enviable position overlooking the bay, the Victoria has recently benefited from an update to its spa and leisure facilities, making it ideal for anyone looking for some R&R. If you want to bag a bargain, their Autumn Breaks special offer gives you dinner, room and breakfast, plus complimentary use of the spa and unlimited use of the putting green during your stay – so pack your golf clubs and relax after a hectic summer.

As well as the Victoria Hotel, there is also its sister property, the Belmont, which is set within three acres of gardens and has some spectacular sea views. Originally a summer residence, there is a wonderful atmosphere here, it’s luxurious and comfortable while also having the feel of a family home. Guests here are welcome to use the facilities at the Victoria Hotel and like there, there are also autumn offers up for grabs.

A little further along the Esplanade, right in front of the beach is the Royal York and Faulkener. They also have spa facilities and incredible views from their sea facing rooms. It is a great hotel for a romantic break without the kids and with their silver service restaurant, you can easily make your break a special occasion.

If you’d like something more informal, check out the Groveside. This Edwardian guest house is just a three minute walk from the town centre, making you centrally located for exploring the shops, beach and eateries that Sidmouth has to offer. Cleverly combining its Edwardian heritage with modern facilities, it has a friendly atmosphere with plenty of charm and is a relaxing and comfortable place to spend a few days.

Alternatively, why not book a cottage? With all the home comforts you could want, as well as your privacy and plenty of space, cottages really allow you to live like a local and gives you the freedom to come and go as you please and dine on your own time, instead of sticking to hotel restaurant opening hours. It’s a great choice for those who want to experience all the eateries that Sidmouth has to offer and these properties are often dog friendly too, ideal if you want to explore the walking routes with your furry friends.

One option for a cottage break is Littlecourt Cottages, who have a portfolio of properties around Sidmouth, including Cherry Tree Cottage,  a 1 bedroom property that is just a short stroll from the beach and town centre. This cute and cosy cottage is great for couples who want to spend some time together before the busy autumn and winter season. Sweetcombe Cottage Holidays also have a variety of cottages available around Sidmouth, as well as elsewhere in East Devon. With a whole host of options, you can easily pick somewhere that perfectly suits your needs.
