Just because the summer holidays are done and we’re heading into autumn doesn’t mean that the fun has to stop, there are plenty of things to see and do in Sidmouth and visiting at this time of year means less crowds and more opportunities to explore.

Here is a selection of top things to do in Sidmouth – whatever the season.

Spend the day on the beach

Whether you choose to visit Sidmouth Town Beach or Jacobs Ladder, you can be sure of lovely coastal views, some rock pooling and as it is quieter but still fairly mild at this time of year, the chance to do a bit of sunbathing too.

Visit Connaught Gardens

On a sunny day, Connaught Gardens is the perfect place to spend a few hours, there is a lovely café there for refreshments and the landscaped gardens are a haven of tranquillity.

Explore the arboretum

Did you know that Sidmouth is home to the UK’s only civic arboretum? It’s a pretty lovely place to visit all year around but at this time of year when the trees are starting to change colour, it is pretty magical – not only that but in September there is the Sidmouth Walking Festival where you can join guided walks around the arboretum and other areas.

Explore the Byes

There is so much more to Sidmouth than the town centre and the seafront, in fact there are huge areas of open space including the Byes which is perfect for exploring and walking whether you’re into a gentle stroll or something more challenging.

The Byes aren’t the only area of open parkland you can explore, there is also the area around Sidbury Castle, Fire Beacon Hill, huge swathes of countryside which is managed by the National Trust and other nature reserves as you move further into East Devon.

Learn something

Firstly, there is the Blue Plaque trail where you can find blue plaques on various buildings around the town and discover more about the region’s history but if the weather turns on you, there are several museums for you to visit too. The town is also home to its own observatory, where many of the events for the annual Science Festival take place.

Go shopping

Sidmouth’s high street is a delightful place for some retail therapy, full of charming independent shops and high street favourites, it’s a great place grab a bargain, find a unique gift or just do a browse!
