Sidmouth comes alive in the Autumn months, so we’ve put together a handy list of the best things you can see and do to make the most of your visit!

  1. Explore the many walks and trails surrounding Sidmouth

Sidmouth is lucky enough to be surrounded by many beautiful walks and trails suitable for those of all abilities. Take a stroll along the South West Coast Path, East Devon Way or Sid Valley and enjoy the perfect combination of coastal and countryside views.

  1. Wander Connaught Gardens

The beauty of Connaught Gardens is taken to a new level in autumn with its stunning warm hues and fallen leaves. The peaceful atmosphere makes the perfect setting for a calm afternoon stroll.

  1. Jump back in time at Sidmouth Museum

The museum showcases Sidmouth's geology, archaeology, lace heritage, and local stories. If the autumn weather gets a bit too chilly, pop inside for your history fix.

  1. Browse the high street and local galleries

Sidmouth’s high street is lined with independent shops, artisan galleries, and local food producers. In autumn especially, gallery openings, pop-ups, and cosy cafés make exploring the town centre extra rewarding.

  1. Walk Jacobs Ladder and enjoy the beach

Jacob’s Ladder (that staircase down from the promenade) gives you direct access to the pebbled shore and dramatic cliff views. As a more secluded beach, Jacob’s Ladder is a perfect spot for a moment of reflection or a little seaside picnic.

  1. Catch a seaside sunset or sunrise

Whether you're an early riser or a night owl, catching a glimpse of a Sidmouth sunrise or sunset is a must in autumn. At this time of year, the sky displays some of the most extraordinary colours.

  1. Visit the Donkey Sanctuary

The Donkey Sanctuary is free to visit and a great attraction for all ages. Get up close with the resident donkeys and learn all about their lifestyle. Finish your visit at the award-winning onsite restaurant, The Kitchen, where you can enjoy delicious seasonal dishes curated from locally sourced produce.

  1. Take a photography walk and capture the autumn colours

We’ve already told you how picturesque and beautiful Sidmouth is in the autumn months, so why not capture the moment by taking a photography walk? Snap shots of the falling leaves, golden skies, and crashing waves to treasure forever.

  1. Attend local autumnal events

Sidmouth’s events calendar is bustling during the autumn months. With a jam-packed half-term on the horizon and  Halloween and bonfire night around the corner, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Embrace the season and join in with a traditional activity, stroll a local market with a hot drink in hand, or simply sit back and enjoy a firework display. You can find a full list of Sidmouth’s Autumn Events on our What’s On page here.

  1. Birdwatching and wildlife spotting

Nature is rich at this time of year, so it’s a perfect time for a spot of birdwatching. You’ll see the classic Herring Gull along the seafront, but head into the countryside and along the River Sid for a glimpse of Grey Wgtails, Redwings, Goldcrests and more. In quieter patches along the river, you may spot a resident otter or two, or a final sighting of this season's dragonflies. And don’t forget to look down; the woodland floor will be rife with mushrooms throughout the autumn months.
