Visiting East Devon over the winter months? While you might think the summer months are the time to visit, there’s still plenty to do at this time of year. Not only are there a host of Christmas and New Year breaks on offer at the region’s hotels to tempt you, but also late night shopping, pantomimes and more!

If you’re coming to the region over the next few months, here are some ideas to help you fill your days!

Visit the sea front

The sea isn’t just for the summer! Visiting the coast at this time of year means quieter beaches and in some places – the chance for your dog to join you too! In Sidmouth, Jacobs Ladder and Sidmouth Town Beach are both a lot quieter at this time of year, making them ideal for a little stroll or a chance to skim some pebbles.

The South West Coast Path and Jurassic Coast Walk are also nice to visit at this time of year, though do make sure to wear sturdy shoes and to wrap up warm.

Winter walks

East Devon is perfect for Winter Walks! We’ve already mentioned the South West Coast Path and the various routes around the Jurassic Coast, but you can also enjoy plenty of walks through the East Devon AONB and around the Byes. Walking along the river is always very picturesque and you get a chance to see a whole different side to the meadows and woodland when you visit in the winter.

Spot winter wildlife

You’ll be able to see different birds especially in the winter. A walk around the Byes and along the routes up to Peak Hill are a good place to start. Otherwise, venture out towards places like nearby Seaton where you can explore the wetlands and see a host of interesting wildlife.

Do a spot of shopping

East Devon has some lovely high streets, ideal for picking up some bargains. In the winter, Sidmouth’s high street looks lovely with the lights and you can often find some really unique gifts in the independent stores. You could even stop for a cheeky warming cup of tea or two!
