Planning a trip to Budleigh Salterton this summer? Well, there are plenty of things to keep you entertained during your visit, including days out on the beach! Whether you want to spend the day relaxing in the sunshine, looking at the interesting pebbles or want to get out on the waves, the most important thing is to stay safe.
Budleigh beach is one of the more fascinating beaches along the Jurassic Coast. Not only is it picturesque but parts of it are within a nature reserve with Site of Special Scientific Interest status. It has long been a popular place for bathing and is known for being safe and clean, though it doesn’t have a life guard on site. It’s also a great site for paddleboarders, kayakers, kite surfing, sea canoeing and wind surfers, with companies offering boards and other equipment for hire in the summer months.
For those of you planning to do some watersports while visiting Budleigh, here are our top tips to stay safe and have a great time.
For those of you heading out for a spot of surfing, kayaking, paddleboarding or swimming:
- Be aware of your surroundings, making sure to take note if there are any potentially dangerous areas, such as rocky areas
- Make sure you are sober before heading out on the waves, save that for after!
- Make sure if you’re going out alone, that someone knows where you are and how long you expect to be
- Take notice of signs and flags and follow any instructions they lay out
- If you start to feel cold, get out of the water as even the strongest of swimmers will tire quicker in cold temperatures.
- If you’re not a confident swimmer or are new to watersports, pace yourself and make sure to stick to shallower waters and gentle waves to start out.
- Be aware of other beach users
- Leave the beach as you found it
The most important thing though – have fun!
