Sidmouth has earned national recognition in the latest Which? annual survey of the UK’s best seaside destinations, ranking 5th overall out of more than 100 towns and villages across the country. Based on the experiences of almost 4,000 holidaymakers, the survey evaluated destinations on a wide range of factors, including scenery, accommodation, food and drink, value for money, and overall visitor satisfaction.

This year, Sidmouth achieved an impressive overall score of 79%, placing it firmly in the top tier of British seaside destinations—above many more heavily marketed or well-known resort towns.

A Strong Showing Across the Board

Sidmouth received five-star ratings in several key categories, including:

  • Scenery – Visitors praised the town’s stunning natural setting along the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its dramatic cliffs and coastal walks.

  • Accommodation – Sidmouth’s mix of boutique hotels, characterful guest houses and welcoming B&Bs contributed to its high score for overnight stays.

  • Food and Drink – The town’s dining scene, from independent cafés to high-quality restaurants, also received top marks.

Although the average cost of accommodation in Sidmouth is estimated at £160 per night—higher than some other destinations—visitors consistently rated it as offering excellent value given the quality of the overall experience.

Recognition for Consistent Quality

Sidmouth’s high ranking is particularly notable given its modest size and traditional character. The survey results suggest that destinations like Sidmouth are thriving by focusing on authenticity, tranquillity, and customer experience, rather than on large-scale attractions or high-volume tourism.

Rory Boland, travel editor at Which?, commented on the trend: “The best seaside towns in our survey rarely have the biggest beaches or most attractions. They offer a high-quality experience, often without the crowds, cost or commercialisation.”

Sidmouth’s continued rise in national rankings reflects a growing appreciation for quieter, well-kept coastal towns that provide a peaceful and high-quality alternative to more commercialised seaside resorts.
