Big progress is being made behind the scenes to protect what makes Sidmouth so special.
A major milestone has been reached in the town’s ongoing programme of sewer improvements, with the installation of a new storm tank at The Ham. Part of a wider £12 million investment, the project is designed to strengthen Sidmouth’s sewer network, reduce storm overflow spills and help safeguard the quality of local bathing waters.
The newly installed tank will provide an additional 100,000 litres of storage, capturing excess water during periods of heavy rainfall. Instead of entering the sea, this water will be held safely until it can be fully treated, helping to protect the “Excellent”-rated bathing waters at Sidmouth Town Beach.
Work is continuing on site over the coming months, with teams now focused on connecting the tank to the existing system and completing final installations. The project is on track to be completed by early summer, with the area restored in time for the much-loved Sidmouth Folk Festival.
This latest step builds on earlier improvements across the town, including extensive work to repair and upgrade sections of the sewer network, helping it cope more effectively during wet weather.
With further enhancements planned, including reducing the amount of rainwater entering the system, this investment is all about protecting Sidmouth’s coastline for residents and visitors alike, now and for the future.
