As spring starts to take hold and the weather (hopefully!) starts to feel a little warmer, why not head outside and enjoy the spring flowers, the sound of bird song and the sight of frolicking lambs by dining al fresco?
Sidmouth is a wonderful place to head with a picnic, there are incredible views over the Jurassic Coast, a host of wide open spaces you can settle down into and of course, plenty of places to pick up some cheeky snacks to include in your picnic!
Here are some of our favourite spots for picnics in and around Sidmouth.
Connaught Gardens
These gardens in the heart of Sidmouth are beautiful all year round, but in the spring when the new bulbs are flowering, it is something quite special. Connaught Gardens features some lovely landscaped areas, as well as large lawns and views of the Esplanade. Why not work up an appetite by exploring Jacob’s Ladder beach first? You can access the steps from Connaught Gardens after all!
Knapp Copse Nature Reserve
Just outside the town is this lovely nature reserve which falls within the East Devon Natural Landscape (AONB). This is a great spot for really getting to enjoy the great outdoors, just remember that it is a nature reserve, so be sure to leave it as you found it and to take all your litter with you.
Blackmore Gardens
Another lovely spot within the town itself, Blackmore Gardens are a great place to hide away from the hustle and bustle of the beach and the main thoroughfares. Like Connaught, there are landscaped areas where you can enjoy the seasonal plants and there is plenty of space for stretching out on a blanket and soaking up the atmosphere.
Hembury Fort
Not far from Sidmouth is Hembury Fort, which is located near the town of Honiton. It’s a former Iron Age Hill Fort and during the spring you’ll find the area carpeted with colourful flowers. Aside from being picturesque, it is also a fascinating historical site and is a popular spot with walkers and picnickers alike!
Don’t forget to check out some of our local walks here, they’re a great way to work up an appetite or get you moving after eating all those treats!
