High streets have been the beating heart of towns and villages for generations and it’s no exception in East Devon. Across the region, the majority of shops on our high streets are occupied by local businesses, born and bred in the individual towns themselves and there is something endlessly special about browsing the high street, bumping into other locals and having the chance to really see and feel the products before you buy them.
Not only that, but shopping local really helps boost your region’s economy, rather than lining the pockets of a big corporation – something else to feel good about this Christmas. In recent years, there's been a renewed focus on the importance of supporting local businesses, and it’s easy to see why. Shopping local doesn’t just mean popping into the nearest independent shop or visiting a farmers’ market; it’s about supporting an entire ecosystem that benefits communities, economies, and the environment.
In East Devon, we’re lucky that we have such diverse high streets with a good mix of national and local brands. From unique gifts and clothes to second hand rarities and sports equipment, you can find a whole host of products right on your door step.
East Devon’s high streets has sweet shops and a toy shop for the young at heart, hardware stores and carpets for the home. You can organise your wedding with bridal wear and florists. Plus, hairdressers, gyms and beauty salons allow you to look and feel good this festive season. You can also visit a range of quality cafes and other eateries to pick up home-cooked festive food and drink – who doesn’t want a warming hot chocolate and a bit of gingerbread to fortify you while browse.
When you shop at your local high street, you’re buying from a person. Probably someone you know either from around or someone you went to school with and every purchase is better with a personal touch. Not only that, but local businesses often have alternatives to the bigger brands that can be cheaper and local businesses are easier to get in touch with should you need any additional assistance.
Looking ahead to next year and planning to reduce your carbon footprint as part of your New Year Resolution? Start early with your Christmas shopping by shopping local – local shops often source their goods locally, which reduces their carbon footprint and in turn, helps reduce yours! You’ll also need less transport to access local shops, which also helps reduce air pollution and traffic.
