This year marks the 16th anniversary of  Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival, an annual celebration of books, reading and writing which takes place right here in beautiful Budleigh Salterton. Every year, the organisers bring us a packed programme of exciting voices in literature and this year is no exception.

Leading the programme this year is best-selling author Rev Richard Coles, who will be joined by celebrity chef Rick Stein, Gardeners’ World presenter Carol Klein and best-selling author Robert Harris, among others.

The festival was supported for many years by Dame Hilary Mantel, who made Budleigh Salterton her home and served as the festival’s honorary president. As she was a staunch supporter of new and emerging writers, organisers created an event in her name to celebrate debut authors, something that will continue with this year’s festival and will be chaired by Cathy Rentzebrink, current Festival President.

As well as celebrating all things literature, there will be a new addition to the festival this year. Head to the Festival Hub marquee on The Green where you can enjoy music with dinner from a host of artists, covering genres including jazz, opera and even traditional West Country sea shanties. Local authors will also be showcasing their work in the Hub, giving you a chance to get to know the writers that call Budleigh and the surrounding East Devon area their home.

Speaking to reporters, Annie Ashworth, the Festival’s Artistic Director, said: “This year’s programme is jam packed with events. We have aimed to be as broad as possible to satisfy a wide range of interests. Book Festivals are all about conversations and learning, entertainment and enjoyment and this year’s offering certainly meets all of those aspirations.”

Events this year include family friendly activities and workshops as well as talks with industry professionals and your favourite authors. You can see a full line up and get tickets here.
