Want to cool off with a dip in the sea or challenge the waves with some watersports? The Jurassic Coast is a great place to do both! With a host of beaches, including the one in Budleigh, there are plenty of places to indulge in swimming, watersports and everything in between.
Plus, getting out on the water is also a great way to experience the Jurassic Coast from a whole new view. Whether you’re into kitesurfing, paddleboarding, surfing or swimming, here are some of the best places to enjoy the surf across East Devon.
Budleigh Salterton
Budleigh’s beach is very popular for swimmers especially, but it is also a good spot for water skiing, wake boarding and wind surfing. In the summer months, you’ll find lots of people setting out from the Estuary and the sea front on their boards and there will be companies popping up offering tuition and equipment hire too.
Just be aware that kite surfing is not allowed in Budleigh Salterton, so if that’s your preferred sport, look to nearby places!
Sidmouth
Sidmouth has two beaches – the town beach and Jacob’s Ladder and is a popular spot for swimmers – there are several local clubs that run regular wild swims. It’s also a good place for kayaking and paddleboarding and you’ll find that in the summer, pop ups appear around the shore front offering everything from tuition and equipment hire. The beach is also serviced by a life boat crew, which helps give an extra peace of mind.
Just be aware that the beaches here aren’t sheltered and the weather can change quickly, so make sure to stick to the shallows and book guided sessions if you’re not confident out on the water.
Exmouth
Exmouth is a great option for anyone wanting to indulge in some watersports while staying in East Devon. Kitesurfing, windsurfing and paddleboarding are all popular here because of the shelter provided by the cliffs. This shelter also makes Exmouth a good spot for learning new skills and the area around the Estuary is also calmer, which can help with building confidence before taking on the sea.
Seaton
There are several companies offering tuition, sessions and equipment hire around the sea front, so you can take on paddleboarding, kayaking and other water based activities.
The beach here can get very busy in the summer, so make sure to be considerate of other beach users and where possible, book sessions to keep everything move and ensure that everyone gets a chance to get out.
Excited about getting out on the waves during your visit to East Devon? While we want you to have fun, make sure to be safe too!
No matter how confident you are, don’t head out alone and if you are going to go on the waves solo, be sure that someone knows where you’re going and how long you’ll be.
We also recommend always wearing a wet suit, even if it is a hot day, as this will keep your body temperature even – the sea is often colder than you might think! Make sure to always have a life vest and some way of alerting others if you get into trouble, like a radio or a whistle – no matter how confident you are.
Most importantly, be aware of other beach users and have fun!
