There’s a reason why Sidmouth is considered a walkers’ paradise – there are several places in and around the town for a leisurely stroll or a more experienced hike, all without having to venture too far from where you’re staying.
The town is not only surrounded by gorgeous countryside and a short journey from the Natural Landscape (AONB) but is also part of the South West Coast Path and Jurassic Coast routes, so there are a seemingly never ending number of walks to enjoy. At this time of year, you’ll be able to see the leaves changing, spy the heather and gorse and of course, spot those creatures that call East Devon home for the autumn and winter months. With coastal paths, nature reserves and walks within close proximity of the town that are dog friendly and child friendly too, you’re never too far from an adventure.
Here are some walking routes so you can enjoy the changing seasons in and around Sidmouth.
The Byes Riverside Walk
You can access the Byes by following signage near the old Toll House. By following the River Sid, you can enjoy the changing leaves on the trees, just be aware that it might be a boggy if the weather has been on the wet side.
Sidmouth to Beer
A popular walking route for those that want a bit more of a challenge is the Sidmouth to Beer route which is about 8 miles and follows the coastal route. If that’s not quite challenge enough, you can continue on to Seaton and even further on to Lyme Regis.
Sidmouth to Ladram Bay
A shorter coastal route takes you from Sidmouth town centre towards Ladram Bay. It’s around 3 miles and does involve climbing Peak Hill, which can be steep in places, but does give you some spectacular views.
Otter Valley Walk
Outside of Sidmouth, the Otter Valley is a great place to explore in the autumn. Much like the Byes, it is a haven for anyone who wants to see the russet leaves and it’s a good option for anyone with children as it is mostly level and has plenty of scenery to keep you occupied.
