The leaves are falling from the trees and there is a crisp feel to the air – which makes it perfect walking weather! Though we enjoy a stroll around North Devon in the summer months, there is something very magical about exploring in the winter, the coastal routes are always quieter, giving you more room to enjoy the beaches and the restrictions are lifted, meaning your dogs can join you for one thing. Another is that the whole landscape, particularly around Exmoor seems to change as the seasons do. Plus, there is something invigorating about a brisk winter walk, so where else is better than the beautiful scenery in North Devon.
If you fancy getting out your boots and your cosiest coat, here are our suggestions for great winter walks to enjoy around North Devon.
Baggy Point
Located near the village of Croyde, Baggy Point is managed by the National Trust, so is a great option for the whole family or those of you who aren’t regular walkers. The waymarked paths give you the choice of easy access routes, as well as long and short options and there are some truly incredible views to enjoy along the way. If you feel up to the challenge, there is a walk from Baggy Point that includes the Bloodhills Cliff – it’s a little more difficult but the views are worth it.

Valley of Rocks
This will always feature on our list of favourite walking routes whatever the season because the views are just incredible. Valley of Rocks can be found in Exmoor, close to the villages of Lynton and Lynmouth and has a variety of routes through it to enjoy. The pathways are mostly level and tarmacked, so are suitable for pushchairs and mobility aids and is popular with dog walkers, too. One of the biggest draws for walkers around the Valley of Rocks is the herd of feral goats that call the rocks home, if you’re lucky you might just see one!

Watersmeet
Also managed by the National Trust and located on Exmoor is Watersmeet. This picturesque area is particularly dramatic looking during the winter months, especially when it has been a bit frosty. There are some lovely walks around the area, including a shorter one, which is family friendly and provides some nice views over the Bristol Channel on a good day. If you like a longer walk, there are circular routes that take you around the Lynmouth and of course, there are the dramatic riverside walks and the waterfalls to enjoy too. Just don’t forget to call into the café for some warming refreshments!
Hartland Point
Right on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, Hartland Point is one of the most dramatic landscapes you can think of, especially at this time of the year when everything seems a bit darker and starker. Follow the South West Coast Path around the Hartland Peninsula and you’ll come across sea birds and some atmospheric views across the ocean.
