We all know that days out create memories that are priceless, but sometimes the stress of affording those days out can make you wary about heading out and about. In North Devon though, there are plenty of ways you can enjoy yourself without breaking the bank. Here are some suggestions for things to do in North Devon where you can make memories worth their weight in gold that won’t cost you a penny.

Rockpooling

You don’t even need to have a net or bucket to enjoy a spot of rock pooling, just head to one of the rockier beaches in the region and see what you can find. Just make sure to return any creatures you might find.

Spotting goats

If you head to Exmoor, particularly the Valley of Rocks area, you will be able see the resident herd of feral goats that live there. Depending on the time of year, you might see the new kids learning how to climb! You will also likely see Exmoor Ponies around Exmoor too, remember the animals you see on the moor are wild, so don’t approach them!

Surfing

North Devon is known as the surfing capital of the UK because of the coast’s perfect conditions for watersports – you can find companies offering guided tours and tuition all along the coast, as well as equipment hire so you don’t have to invest in your own boards.

Crabbing

Like rockpooling, this is a cheap and fun thing to do while out and about in North Devon. You can pick up crabbing lines from the shops along the sea front for a minimal charge and spend as long as you like at one of the region’s harbours. Again, make sure to return anything you find!

Stargazing

North Devon isn’t just a surf reserve, parts of it also fall under the UK’s first dark skies reserve. The Exmoor National Park was given the title because of the lack of light pollution and every year there is a festival full of events where you can enjoy the night sky, many of which are free. Outside of the festival, head to the moor on a clear night and enjoy the stars, you can see the Milky Way, constellations and more all with the naked eye.
