A visit to North Devon means a chance to sample a traditional Devonshire Cream Tea and luckily for you, we’ll be celebrating National Cream Tea Day this month and there is no where better to do so!

National Cream Tea Day falls on the last Friday in June every year and though we’re sure you’ll have had plenty over the jubilee, this is a very important date in Devon’s calendar, not least because we invented the cream tea – that’s right! The first ever recorded cream tea was from monks living in Tavistock!

In North Devon, we take the traditional cream tea very seriously, but we also know that it is fun to do your own twist on a classic, which is why you’ll be able to find a variety of cream tea options across the region, suitable for vegans, those on a gluten free diet and those who are celebrating a special occasion – you can even swap out the tea for coffee, hot chocolate or if you’re feeling a little indulgent, champagne.

If you do find yourself in North Devon, here are some top tips for how to enjoy a cream tea like a Devonian.

1 - Once your beverage of choice has been served, you may start on the scones.

2 – Pick up your scone and twist it to halve it, a well baked scone will come apart cleanly with a simple twist.

3- Spoon your desired amount of cream and jam onto your plate

4 – spread the cream first, then top with jam. Far be it for us to criticise how Her Majesty likes to build her scones or what etiquette has to say on the matter, but when in Devon, you must eat your scones the Devon way, with cream first.

5 – Enjoy
