According to a new list of popular staycation spots booked for 2022 compiled by SnapTrip, Bideford is the number one destination for holiday makers looking for a staycation this year. The town in North Devon tops the list, beating Newquay in Cornwall and places in the Lake District.
Though Bideford might not be your first thought when looking for a destination, it is a fascinating place to visit. It is a historic port town located along the River Torridge, it was home to Charles Kingsley, the author of the Water Babies and the inspiration behind the name of the nearby village Westward Ho! Another notable resident was Sir Richard Grenville, who was instrumental in establishing colonies in North America.
Bideford is a great base for anyone wanting to explore North Devon and Exmoor. As well spending time in this lovely little town, you can easily visit the beaches at WestWard Ho!, Saunton Sands and Croyde Bay and you are close to the premier town of Barnstaple. Instow and Northam Burrows are also close by and you can catch the regular ferry over to Lundy Island. Bideford is also home to some of the top attractions in the region – including the highest and fastest roller coaster in North Devon!
