Autumn is a great time to explore North Devon with your dog. Once the summer crowds have gone and some of the seasonal beach restrictions are lifted, there are even more places to enjoy a walk together.
With quieter beaches, cooler days and plenty of space to roam, it’s a lovely time of year to get outside and enjoy the coast.
Discover North Devon’s dog-friendly beaches
North Devon has some of the South West’s best beaches, with plenty of space for dogs to run, play and explore.
Saunton Sands and Instow are both dog-friendly all year round and are great choices for a long walk. Saunton’s wide beach and dunes give dogs plenty of room to run, while Instow is a more sheltered spot with lovely views across the estuary.
Autumn also means that dogs can return to some of North Devon’s beaches where restrictions apply during the summer. From 1 October to 30 April, dogs are welcome on Croyde and Combe Martin, making both great options for an autumn walk.
There are also several beaches where dogs are welcome throughout the year, including Hele Bay, Watermouth Bay and Clovelly. Other popular beaches, including Woolacombe and Putsborough, have areas where dogs are allowed, so check the signs when you arrive.
Find your perfect walk
One of the best things about exploring North Devon with your dog is the choice of places to walk. You could spend the morning running along the sand at Westward Ho!, explore the dunes at Braunton Burrows or head to one of the smaller coves along the coast.
There are plenty of beaches and coastal spots to choose from, including Croyde, Woolacombe, Putsborough Sands, Barricane Beach, Combesgate, Rockham, Lee Bay, Lynmouth, Wildersmouth, Watermouth Bay, Bucks Mills and Combe Martin.
Some dogs will love nothing more than racing across the sand and jumping in the waves, while others will be happy exploring at their own pace. Whichever your dog prefers, North Devon gives you plenty of opportunities to enjoy the coast together.
And why not make a day of it? After your walk, stop for lunch at a dog-friendly pub or café, explore one of North Devon’s towns or simply find a spot to sit and enjoy the sea views.
With so much to explore, autumn is the perfect time to pack the lead, grab the walking boots and discover North Devon together.
