New Year’s Day sea swims have become a popular way to welcome the year across North Devon, drawing locals and visitors to the coast for a refreshing and memorable start to January. From organised charity swims to informal dips with friends and family, beaches and harbours across the area come alive on 1 January with people keen to take to the water.
Westward Ho! is one of the most well known locations for a New Year’s Day swim, with participants gathering on the beach before heading into the sea, often in support of local causes. Saunton Sands also attracts swimmers each year, making use of its wide open shoreline and easy access. In Ilfracombe, festive harbour swims offer a more sheltered setting and are a regular feature of the town’s New Year calendar. While each location has its own character, they all share a strong sense of community and a love for North Devon’s coastline.
Anyone planning to take part is encouraged to think carefully about safety. The RNLI highlights that sea temperatures in winter are very cold, typically between six and ten degrees, and water below fifteen degrees can trigger cold water shock. Entering the sea slowly allows the body time to adjust and reduces the risk of breathing difficulties in the first moments of immersion. Swimming with others rather than alone is strongly advised, as is wearing a brightly coloured swim hat to remain visible.
The RNLI also recommends considering the use of a wetsuit for warmth and buoyancy, particularly for those who are less experienced in open water swimming. Tow floats can provide additional visibility and reassurance, and checking local weather and sea conditions before entering the water is an important part of planning any winter swim. People with underlying health conditions, especially heart or respiratory issues, should seek medical advice before taking part.
Spectators and swimmers alike are reminded that if someone does get into difficulty, help should be called immediately by dialling 999 or 112 and asking for the Coastguard. Prompt action can make a vital difference.
New Year’s Day sea swims are a distinctive part of winter on the North Devon coast and offer a positive way to begin the year. With sensible preparation and an awareness of RNLI safety advice, participants can enjoy the experience while respecting the power of the sea and looking out for one another.
