  1. Tiverton

Tiverton

Located right in the centre of Devon, Tiverton is the ideal base for exploring all over Devon, not only can you escape to the countryside, but you’re also well based for visiting the city of Exeter and the various towns and villages in between.

From your base in Tiverton, you can take in the traditional thatched cottages that can be found in the rural areas of the town, enjoy the wildlife that can be found around the town and sample the local produce that is created right on the doorstep.
As well as this, the town is serviced by a train station serving the main rail network across Devon, giving you ample opportunity to visit other attractions and popular resorts all over the county.

Tiverton is a charming town with many unique attractions and gives you a chance to step back in time, with everything from castles, historic stately homes and of course, the only remaining horse drawn barges in the UK.

If you love history, Tiverton is a great choice for a break in Devon. You can visit Tiverton Castle which has stood in the town since 1106, Bickleigh Castle which has moated gardens and Knightshayes Court, one of the National Trust properties in Devon. The house is a real gem, with wonderful architecture and Medieval style interiors. The décor is full of amazing decoration and is well worth the visit when in town.
Other heritage attractions include Tiverton Museum of Mid-Devon Life where you can find galleries full of the town’s social and industrial heritage. The Grand Western Canal, which sits on the edge of the town, runs for 11 ¾ miles and is a popular beauty spot. Stroll or cycle along the towpath keeping your eyes peeled for local wildlife, including dragonflies, moorhens and kingfishers. Take a trip along the canal on the Tiverton Canal Co.’s horse drawn barge or pick up a day permit and enjoy a paddle on the water at your own pace on a canoe, kayak or paddleboard.

Tiverton has an active social calendar with markets and events taking place all year around. Plus, there are a whole host of interesting shops, including the historic pannier market, independent stores offering a host of unique gifts and familiar names. Being so centrally located means you’re never too far from the shopping centres and popular attractions that are dotted around Devon, making Tiverton the perfect base for families, couples and those in town for businesses. The Mid-Devon Show is a particular draw for visitors, it showcases the very best of countryside life, plus there are plenty excellent foods, entertainment and everything else you can think of!

As it is such a popular place to visit, there are a whole host of places to stay including b&bs, hotels, guesthouses, farm holidays and more, so you can really pick the ideal place for you – whether you need plenty of room for the kids, or something dog friendly, or you want something small and cosy for a romantic getaway, there are plenty of options for you in Tiverton.
