The town is home to one of the region’s only thatched museums and is somewhere you can even experience what life was like as a smuggler! East Budleigh in particular is famous for being the birthplace of Sir Walter Raleigh and there are plenty of ways you can find out more about his life at the various museums in and around town.
Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival
Perhaps the biggest event on the town’s calendar is the Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival which takes place every year and features some of the biggest names in literature and publishing. The festival was founded in 2008 by Susan Ward who wanted to attract the UK’s most critically acclaimed authors, poets and playwrights to the town to share their work and discuss the industry. Since then, the festival has grown and consistently attracts leading authors, poets, travel writers, journalists and more, including the late Dame Hilary Mantel, the double Man Booker Prize Winner and best-selling author. The festival remains one of the leading events of its kind in the south west and there are several events that take place throughout the year hosted by the festival’s organisers.
The festival isn’t the only thing to look forward to in Budleigh, you also have a range of museum and art galleries with themed events and static exhibits for you to visit – ideal for those days when the weather is against you!
