Things to Do in Budleigh Salterton

It’s impossible to be bored in Budleigh! Not only do you have the abundance of countryside to explore, the cycle tracks and walking routes can provide hours of entertainment, plus there is the Jurassic Coast and its many coastal walks and the 2 mile long pebble beach.

Budleigh Salterton is one of the region’s most unspoilt towns and has heaps of character, making it a great attraction in its own right. You can easily spend your time just wandering around, taking in the sights and enjoying the atmosphere.

Sports and more

If you like the idea of being active, there is plenty to keep you amused in Budleigh Salterton. You can hire bikes from several businesses in town, plus the chance to enjoy some water sports with seasonal companies appearing along the coast in the warmer months.

If you’re the sort of person who prefers to exercise your credit card than your body, you’re also in luck as Budleigh Salterton is home to a charming high street full of quaint, independent shops offering a range of unique items you won’t find anywhere else. Whether you want something practical that you forget to pack or you want to treat yourself, there is plenty to find here.

The town is home to one of the region’s only thatched museums and is somewhere you can even experience what life was like as a smuggler! East Budleigh in particular is famous for being the birthplace of Sir Walter Raleigh and there are plenty of ways you can find out more about his life at the various museums in and around town.

Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival

Perhaps the biggest event on the town’s calendar is the Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival which takes place every year and features some of the biggest names in literature and publishing. The festival was founded in 2008 by Susan Ward who wanted to attract the UK’s most critically acclaimed authors, poets and playwrights to the town to share their work and discuss the industry. Since then, the festival has grown and consistently attracts leading authors, poets, travel writers, journalists and more, including the late Dame Hilary Mantel, the double Man Booker Prize Winner and best-selling author. The festival remains one of the leading events of its kind in the south west and there are several events that take place throughout the year hosted by the festival’s organisers.

The festival isn’t the only thing to look forward to in Budleigh, you also have a range of museum and art galleries with themed events and static exhibits for you to visit – ideal for those days when the weather is against you!
