Explore East Devon and Jurassic Coast

Featuring a UNESCO World Heritage Site and comprising of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, arguably East Devon is one of the prettiest areas in England. The dramatic cliffs of the Jurassic Coast that line the towns and villages of this area and the many places of historical interest, make it a wonderful place to visit and stay.

Whether you agree or not, you can't deny that it is one of the most ecologically interesting places in the UK, the Jurassic Coast, and by extension, the East of Devon, is a truly fascinating place to visit, whether you want to spend days on the beach, explore the countryside or sample some of the incredible local delicacies at the region’s many eateries.

Natural beauty abounds

The East Devon Natural Landscape (AONB) is a vast and stunning landscape where you can find heathland, hills, river valleys and woodland as well as parts of the Jurassic Coast, where you can find many prehistoric fossils and rocks. One of the best ways to enjoy the Natural Landscape (AONB) is via the East Devon Way. Full of trails and tracks, the East Devon is perfect for walking, hiking, cycling, horse riding or whatever other type of transport you want to use. The routes will take you through beautiful countryside as well as connecting you with museums, Iron Age ruins and the remains of a Bronze Age burial ground.

For a more coastal walk, don’t forget to enjoy the South West Coast Path, which covers part of the Jurassic Coast and offers spectacular views at various points along the path.

Because of its diverse range of attractions, East Devon is a great place to holiday even during a winter get away.

Wet weather activities in East Devon

If the weather disappoints, as it so often does in Britain, you can still broaden your knowledge by visiting the various museums which focus on the prehistoric nature of the rocks and offer fossil walks as well as a range of other events throughout the year making it a great choice for families and ideal in rainy weather!

To keep the little ones amused, why not explore one of the region’s outdoor activities? There are several organised trips and organisations that make use of the landscape, including family friendly assault courses.  For the adults, relax in one of the many spas the region offers! The region is awash with incredible luxury hotels, many of which have spa and leisure treatments available to both guests and day visitors. Alternatively, take a look at the many coastal cottages which offer beautiful views of the sea or a B&B where you can enjoy a hearty, Devon breakfast made with local produce!

East Devon and the Jurassic Coast has some of the most beautiful beaches in the region, most of which are found in quaint towns and villages, such as Sidmouth or Seaton where a variety of local produce, as well as high street shops and restaurants can be found, along with traditional pubs and some of the best hotels in the South West. There are plenty of places with room available for your four legged friends as well, take a look at our dog-friendly Devon pages to see which accommodation will guarantee a wonderful holiday for your dog as well.
