The Woodbury Castle Circular Walk is a gentle, atmospheric route exploring the heathland and ancient ramparts surrounding Woodbury Castle, an impressive Iron Age hillfort set within the Pebblebed Heaths.
Starting from the car park, the route winds along gorse-lined paths and across open commons, where wide skies and birdsong create a strong sense of space and calm. Shady plantation sections offer contrast, while the elevated position provides sweeping views across East Devon and, on clear days, towards the Exe Estuary.
A short pebbly descent adds a small touch of adventure before the path rejoins broad, easy tracks that lead back towards the hillfort. Throughout the walk, the historic earthworks remain a striking presence, giving the route a real sense of place and history.
At just under three miles, this is a manageable and rewarding outing for most walkers — ideal for a short escape into open heathland with far-reaching views and a strong connection to Devon’s past.
