With two National Parks, several coastlines and some of the oldest connections to golf in the UK – Devon is the perfect destination for anyone wanting to do something new in the coming year. Speaking of golf, there are lots of hotels with their own onsite golf courses and themed golfing breaks available, like at Highbullen Hotel which has its own 18-hole specification course, which is perfect for novices and experts alike, providing a perfect balance of challenging and rewarding shots. Whether you’re looking for a new leisure activity for 2022 or you’re preparing for retirement, this is an easy way to learn a new sport.

There are other hobbies you can learn more about and try out in Devon, including fly fishing – whether you’re a beginner or have been fishing for years, the Arundell in Lifton is one of the leading fly fishing hotels in the region. On the grounds, there are 22 miles of private fishing opportunities across five different rivers and tuition on hand for the whole day.

If that sounds a little too gentle for you, there are plenty of other options including rock climbing on Dartmoor. The team at Crag 2 Mountain offer a host of adventure activities giving you the chance to challenge yourself to everything from climbing, mountaineering, navigation skills and caving. The team of experienced tutors are on hand every step of the way as you achieve your goals and they pride themselves on making every adventure accessible and affordable – so no matter what your ability, you can conquer some of Dartmoor’s steepest areas!

One of the most famous activities available in Devon is watersports, which covers everything from surfing to sailing. The North Devon coast provides the perfect environment for a range of sports from surfing to paddleboarding and windsurfing and you can find equipment hire and training session all along the coast. Alternatively, you can try canoeing with Canoe Tamar, a river safari where you can not only learn how to operate a canoe, but also see a whole new side of the River Tamar. Or for those of you who want to try out your skills before getting out on the water, head to North Devon Wake Park,  where you can sample some watersports before getting out on the ocean. Located in Bideford, the Wake Park is just ten minutes from the coast and has plenty of space on its lakes where you can learn everything you need to know about wake boarding and other sports.

While you’re in North Devon, if you want to expand your skills further, visit Skern Lodge,  an activity centre that really takes advantage of the natural world around you. Here you can try your hand at a host of different challenges including archery, watersports, abseiling and more. Similarly, at the other end of the county, there is Roadford Lake, which can be found in the beautiful Wolf Valley and offers just about every activity you can possibly think of, all enjoyed out in the open with incredible views from every direction.
