The Books are my Bag campaign that runs annually to celebrate independent bookshops in the UK takes place on 6th October, so if you’re in Devon you might want to check some of these out and grab yourself a book or two!
Quayside Books, Teignmouth
This is a cute little bookshop offering both new and second hand books. Teignmouth is a quirky seaside town near Babbacombe, Torquay and Dawlish making it a great base for anyone who wants to explore this part of Devon. If you want to try this bookshop and scout out some of the other nearby shops, you could always make a trip of it by staying at Riviera Apartments, a collection of self-catering holiday apartments giving you the flexibility to come and go as you wish. If you want the chance to check out more of the coastline, Devon Valley Holiday Park in nearby Shaldon has stunning views and is a perfect base for a family holiday. Once you’re done with book shopping, you can always spend a few hours at a treasure hunt with Explore Devon – maybe it’ll inspire you to write your own book!
Dartmouth Bookseller, Dartmouth
This little independent bookshop is a great place to visit if you want to find a few hidden gems. Dartmouth is a beautiful estuary town which is well worth a visit if you’re heading to Devon. Be sure to make Dartmouth Camping and Carvanning Club your base, especially if you have children. Otherwise, if settling with your books in a cute, country cottage is more your thing, Snaptrip have several properties in the Dartmouth area for you to stay in. To make your whole trip something out of a period romance novel, make the trip to Millbrook Inn for dinner, set next to a babbling brook and with stunning surrounds, it’s a great haven for anyone who loves food and feeling like they’re living in a novel.
Totnes Bookshop, Totnes
This is a great place for anyone wanting to introduce their children to reading, it has a great selection of children’s books and is in the quaint and quirky town of Totnes, where even those that aren’t that into reading can find something to interest them. While you’re in town for the Books are my Bag campaign, make sure to make a weekend of it so you can also experience Totnes’ Good Food Market. After picking out some good books for the kids, inspire them further by heading to Pennywell Farm for a few hours. For the adults, book into Beyond Escapes, not only can you spend the night there, they also have a spa and a restaurant, so you’ll be sure that everyone can have a good time!
