Wild moors, sandy beaches and some of the highest sea cliffs in England … it’s no wonder Devon’s such a popular holiday destination.
It’s also blessed with a wide range of hotels, inns and B&Bs – but how to decide where to stay? We’ve some great pointers towards some of the top hotels in Devon from this week’s guest blogger The Good Hotel Guide … read on for a few top hotel tips.
Best for a view: The Horn of Plenty
First-rate service, good food, comfortable rooms and plenty of character – what more could you want from a country house hotel? The Horn of Plenty has all that but it’s the location that’s the real crowd-pleaser. This 19th-century house has unbeatable views across the Tamar Valley from the terraces, rooms (ask for one with a balcony overlooking the valley) and from the restaurant. Speaking of which – Head Chef Ashley Wright nurtures the restaurant’s excellent reputation with dishes like warm lobster salad, truffled Cornish potatoes, broad beans and lemon aioli, and local wood pigeon breasts, apricot, pistachio and spiced granola. To quote one Good Hotel Guide guest: “exquisite”. More
Best for a sense of history: Northcote Manor
You’ll find history literally written on the walls at Northcote Manor; three striking murals by Barrington Barber, commissioned by a previous owner, tell the story of the site from its early monastic days. The current building dates from the 18th century, but the remains of the original manor house still stand just a few hundred yards away. While the hotel has a past that includes time as an abbey – it was owned by Tavistock Abbey – the current arrangements are anything but monkish. The rooms come with fresh fruit, mints and home-made shortbread. Book the Heron suite for a freestanding bath in the bedroom. More
Best for townhouse chic: The 25 Boutique B&B
Don’t be fooled by the conservative exterior of this Edwardian villa. The 25 Boutique B&B has panache! Think blue padded bedheads, zebra heads wearing neon sunglasses and wallpaper to match, complimentary iPads and Apple TV with on-demand movies. The more suspicious among us might think that the flamboyant décor is trying to hide other flaws, but we’d be wrong. Owners Andy and Julian Banner-Price are experienced hoteliers, and the colourful rooms of this 5-star B&B are balanced by an elegance and thoughtfulness that can’t be faked. It’s just a ten-minute walk to Torquay’s seafront too. Book the Torre Suite to meet that zebra. More
Best for getting away from it all: The Old Rectory Hotel
The roads around here appear to lead to nowhere, slowly: steep winding lanes piled high with hedges and ferns on either side. But bear with them. Soon you’ll emerge at The Old Rectory Hotel in the tiny hamlet of Martinhoe on the edge of the Exmoor coast. The remoteness is an obvious draw. Close to the South West Coast Path, this hotel is slap-bang in walking country. But you might not make it that far. Add eclectic luxury rooms and piles of magazines and books to a fun, award-winning wine list and a restaurant that even the locals want to sample, and the temptation to stay put is strong. More
Best for foodies: Rosehill Rooms and Cookery
With just four rooms, Rosehill Rooms and Cookery is something of a home-from-home – if your home happens to be a Grade II-listed Victorian house with big, airy bedrooms and sea views. Oh, and cookery classes and demos from a professional chef in the winter. King-sized beds are the minimum here, and they’re all decked out with luxury Egyptian bed linen – just try not to get crumbs from the home-made cakes and biscuits in them. If easy access to the beach, coast path and Budleigh Salterton’s lively centre aren’t enough to tempt you, come for one of chef Willi Rehbock’s cookery classes and demonstrations on bread making, seafood and Mediterranean cuisine.
