You are here > Things To Do > Fursdon Gardens and Tea Room
Fursdon is one of Devon’s oldest family homes where the Fursdon family has lived for more than 750 years. The setting is stunning with views across the parkland and beyond through Devon’s rolling hills to Dartmoor. The location could not be more rural yet Fursdon is close to the cultural and thriving city of Exeter and the market towns of Tiverton and Crediton.
Outside there is an attractive and informal garden to explore, with mixed traditional and contemporary planting. Roses, herbs and bulbs; wild flowers, trees and shrubs. This hillside garden has interest and colour throughout the seasons with sculpted paths leading around its contours into a terraced and cob walled garden and there is a further walk down to the Meadow garden, designed as a memorial to a member of the family in the 1860s and undergoing restoration. It now has a pond to encourage wildlife. There are vistas and views throughout the garden and plenty of carefully placed benches to make the most of them. Close by on the estate is Cadbury Castle, an Iron Age hill fort and well known landmark. This is reputedly the home of the Cadbury Dragon who is said to protect the Fursdon family. At various times of the year there is also a bluebell wood and wildflower meadow to walk through.
While you are at Fursdon you may like to stay for a Devon cream tea or some other home baked treat in the Coach Hall tea room. The scones are freshly made and the cream clotted. There is also a roaring fire lit to keep you warm on cooler days.
It is particularly pleasant to have exclusive use on a group visit and more time for your tour. We can cater for morning coffee, lunch or afternoon tea. Fursdon Coach Hall can also be hired as a meeting venue with catering for up to 40 people. There is room to park a coach and plenty of further parking if you are coming by car. Garden and tea room open on Bank Holiday Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from Easter to the end of September.
The house tours are currently not available but we are planning to re-open in June 2021 do please come and enjoy the gardens, tea room and views in the meantime.
