From weekly farmers’ markets to small delis, independent shops, restaurants and cafes, there are plenty of places to find a good meal on Dartmoor.
Because of the wonderfully diverse nature of the terrain in Dartmoor’s National Park, there is a huge focus on locally produced food and drink and it’s little wonder – the landscape on Dartmoor produces some of the best food in the UK! From the cattle that grazes all year around on the moorland and the gloriously mineral-rich spring water that can be found in the valleys and the fruit and vegetables grown in the rich soil here are sold all over the region.
The community on Dartmoor love their food and work hard to commit to producing sustainable menus where possible.
There are a number of food festivals and other events that take place across the moor and there are regular farmers’ markets in the towns and villages held weekly. The farmers’ markets are made up of a variety of local produce much of which is sown and reared in much the same way as it was when the land was first used for farming. Ancient traditions are a big part of how the food and drink producers in the region maintain the amazing taste and sustainability of their products.
Wherever you go on Dartmoor, you’re never too far from a restaurant, pub, hotel or tea room where you will be greeted with a warm welcome, a cosy atmosphere and some delicious food and drink of the highest quality.
Many of the menus are full of freshly caught fish, locally produced meat and decadent cream teas. You’ll also find some of the most delicious vegetarian options and superb wines, gins, ciders and beers all made and sold locally. There are restaurants and hotels that serve organic food picked from their own farms and kitchen gardens that morning and gracing your plate that afternoon! What could be better after spending a day exploring this beautiful region then settling down with some amazing, hearty, home grown food.
Your dogs are welcome to join you in many of the region’s cafes, tearooms and pubs too, with several of them offering dog treats and water bowls for your furry friends while you tuck into a traditional Devon cream tea or a steaming roast dinner covered in gravy.
We all know that dining out with children can be a struggle, with the popularity of Dartmoor as a family friendly holiday destination, you’ll find dining with the kids to be a delight! There are pubs, restaurants and cafes all offering children’s menus and outdoor play areas for them to enjoy giving them chance to work off some steam and you chance to relax over a nice cup of tea, or a cheeky glass of wine.
The huge choice of eateries around Dartmoor means that you can find the best menus to suit your taste and budget. Whatever cuisine you are in the mood for, you’ll easily find it here. Plus the region’s butchers, fishmongers, greengrocers and bakers are happy to show off the very best that Dartmoor has to offer and is proud of the high quality of the local produce.
Make sure to sample some of the region’s tasty local food at an eatery, event or market while you’re visiting Dartmoor.
