South Molton

South Molton is a place of historical significance in North Devon.

It is thought to have originated in Saxon times and was originally built around the town’s church.

South Molton has been a thriving community since the earliest recorded days of its history. The people who live there are proud of their heritage and like to celebrate their past at the Museum, where you’ll find two Royal Borough Charters that were granted to the town in 1590 by Elizabeth 1st and 1684 by Charles 2nd. Both of these are commemorated every year with the Olde English Fair, which is held each June. It is an ideal place for anyone with an interest in history. The main square is much the same as it has been for years and there are many buildings of historical interest in the town.

South Molton can be found on the Heritage Trail, which guides you around the area and takes in the past and present.

These days, South Molton is a popular market town, there are a small number of local shops and a focus on markets. There is a main market during the week and an extra pannier market at a weekend. The town has built a reputation for its cafes serving locally sourced food and the independent shops and market stalls sell everything from handmade chocolates to locally crafted home ware.

South Molton is often referred to as the gateway to Exmoor. With its quiet setting it is a great base to explore the moor and the surrounding areas.
