Devon’s timeless landscape provides a huge range of amazing places to explore.
There are quaint towns like Callington, Croyde and Bideford, the ancient mysteries of Exmoor and Hartland, historic towns like Cockington, Totnes, Ilfracombe and Salcombe and the hustle and bustle of Exeter.
One great way to uncover the hidden secrets of all these locations and have a lot of fun at the same time is with a Treasure Trail.
From a Murder Mystery Trail in Torquay, the birth-place of author Agatha Christie, to a Treasure Hunt Trail in Lyme Regis there’s loads to choose from across the county.
Designed for ages from six to 106, there are no fewer than 46 Treasure Trails to choose from across Devon with enticing titles like ‘Dartmoor Transmoor Spy’, ‘Plymouth Waterfront’, ‘Tarka Spy Trail’ and ‘Bishopsteignton’.
Explore the parks, gardens and seafront of Paignton on a Treasure Hunt Trail. Solve the whodunnit Murder Mystery Trail in Exeter taking in gardens with stunning views across the city and the glorious Exeter cathedral. Or crack the code and complete the Spy Mission Trail by car in the Teign Valley which where you’ll discover the rugged tors of Dartmoor and England's highest waterfall at Canonteign Falls.
The Trails cost £6.99 (plus P&P if required), are suitable for groups of up to five and, compared to the average family day out at a theme park or visitor attraction, represent amazing value for money. They’re also really popular with a Facebook star rating of 4.8/5.
Lasting around two hours, the aim is to solve clues on a circular route of approximately two miles incorporating plaques, signs, statues, monuments, images, engravings or any other unique or quirky features found in the area.
They can be downloaded from Treasure Trails’ website and printed immediately, or sent in the post.
As well as providing a fun way to explore a new area, the Trails also offer the chance to see an area you thought you knew well in a totally different way.
