What is UK Town of Culture?

UK Town of Culture is an initiative that recognises and celebrates the important role towns play in shaping the UK's cultural identity. The competition highlights places that are using creativity, heritage, arts and community engagement to make a positive impact on residents and visitors alike.

The title offers towns the chance to raise their profile on a national stage, develop exciting cultural programmes and inspire local pride. Successful bids typically demonstrate strong community involvement, innovative ideas and a vision for how culture can benefit the town long into the future.

For visitors, the competition is a reminder of the incredible variety of places waiting to be discovered across Devon. From award winning beaches and historic harbours to traditional markets, independent galleries, museums and year round events, Devon's towns each offer something different to explore.

This year, entrants were invited to submit a postcard showcasing their town and what makes it special. The full map of entrants and their postcards is available to view here.
