This summer, the National Trust’s Saltram in Plymouth is celebrating 30 years since the release of Ang Lee’s Sense and Sensibility, inviting visitors to step into the setting of one of the most beloved period dramas of all time.

The 1995 adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel – starring Kate Winslet, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, and Alan Rickman - was filmed at several locations across Devon, including Saltram, which played a starring role as Norland Park, the grand home from which the Dashwood family is forced to depart after Mr Dashwood’s death.

Throughout the summer, Saltram is marking this special anniversary milestone, offering fans of the film a chance to relive key moments from the story in the very rooms and garden locations where they were brought to life on screen. Visitors will be able to explore the show-stopping Saloon, the Mirror Room, the Entrance Hall, the Library, and the historic Stables, all of which feature in the film.

Olivia Meeson, Visitor Operations and Experience Manager for Saltram, says: “As one of the film’s standout locations, we really wanted to celebrate the 30th anniversary of this cinematic classic which continues to captivate audiences around the world.”

One of Sense and Sensibility’s most memorable scenes includes Margaret Dashwood’s treehouse, built in a 350-year-old oak tree at the end of Lime Avenue, which still stands today and is a must-visit spot for fans of the film.

“We’re proud that Saltram played such a central role in bringing Jane Austen’s story to life on screen,” Olivia continues. “We look forward to welcoming visitors to step into the world of the Dashwoods and experience the magic of the film for themselves. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or discovering Sense and Sensibility for the first time, this is a unique opportunity to see a stunning film location up close.”

Overlooking the River Plym, the 500-acre Saltram estate encompasses sweeping parkland, extensive gardens with follies and exotic planting, and a Palladian mansion with stunning Georgian interiors.

The Sense and Sensibility celebration runs until 31 August. It’s free for National Trust members and included in normal admission prices. Find out more here: https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/devon/saltram
