Devon is a county of compromises, it has two coastlines, two National Parks, beaches, countryside, some of the biggest theme parks in the south of England and a whole host more. If you’re looking for picturesque countryside, family beaches and lots of holiday resorts full of things to do, make sure to take a look at the South Devon region, which features the famous English Riviera, places like Salcombe and Totnes and Britain’s Ocean City, Plymouth. Everywhere you look, there are award winning hotels, cosy cottages and glamping and camping sites so you can choose the accommodation that best suits your budget and needs, as well as plenty of theme parks, zoos, aquariums and more to keep you entertained during your visit!

South Devon has long been a favourite for families because of its mild climate, so even if the weather is up to its usual tricks, you’ll find it is still warmer here than elsewhere, making it perfect for trips to the beach!

Thinking of spending some time in South Devon?   One of the top places for holiday makers is the town of Torquay, within the English Riviera. Full of Blue Flag beaches, a lively marina and a fascinating selection of attractions, it’s a great option for families.

TLH Leisure Resort is in the town and features 4 hotels and a series of self catering apartments, all with access to swimming pools, leisure facilities, spas and nightly entertainment. The seafront and the marina are just a five minute walk and kids under 10 can even stay for free – making this a great option for families.

Other options for a hotel stay include the Imperial Torquay, a Victorian-era hotel sitting on the cliffs that overlooks the Torbay. The Imperial has its own onsite health and beauty centre, offering a range of treatments to help you relax. While the Haytor Hotel sits within a large garden and is just a short walk from Meadfoot Beach, one of several that can be easily accessed from Torquay.

It isn’t just hotels on offer either, Osborne Apartments are a series of beautiful self catering apartments and Babbacombe Palms is a family run guest house in the Babbacombe area of Torquay. Nearby you’ll find the family favourite Babbacombe Model Village, which brings visitors from all over the world to see its tiny landscaped gardens and scenes.

You’ll also find Torre Abbey, with its deadly garden, dedicated to local writer Agatha Christie and their usual host of exhibits and displays – which is also well worth a visit.

Elsewhere in the English Riviera, there are Paignton and Brixham. In Paignton is the famous Paignton Zoo and Brixham is of course home to the fish market and picturesque harbour. The UK’s largest outdoor waterpark can also be found here, Splashdown Quaywest is the perfect place to go for cooling off in the warmer weather! If you’d rather stay in this area of the English Riviera, Beverley Holidays overlooks the sea, is just a short walk to Goodrington Sands and has a mixture of accommodation options with everything from touring pitches to lodges and lots of all-weather activities for all ages. Or in the heart of Paignton there is the Mercure Paignton or the Palace Hotel and Spa for those looking for a hotel stay, while in Brixham, you’ll find Brixham Holiday Park or self catering options with Port Properties.

Further south you have the historic town of Dartmouth, nestled on the banks of the River Dart and famous for the castle, which was once owned by a pirate! For fans of paddleboarding, Dartmouth is a great location. There are some beautiful self catering properties around the town, including those on Your Devon Escape’s portfolio. If you fancy a spot of glamping, check out Fountain Violet Farm, which is close to the River Dart and Mill Bay Cove, which is a haven for watersports. The farm features high end, off grid glamping options with actual beds and fully equipped kitchens, perfect if you want something a little different.

While you’re in Dartmouth, take a little trip along the Dart towards Totnes. Famed for its bohemian vibe and rich history, Totnes is a vibrant and eclectic holiday destination where sustainability and creativity are hugely celebrated. Find out more about Totnes here.

The coastal town of Salcombe is another gem, known for its stunning beaches and crystal clear waters – it's popular with the rich and famous and once you see it, you’ll understand why! The hotels and properties here are luxurious, like the Lanterns, a collection of holiday apartments at Hope Cove and Bolberry Farm Cottages which fall within a stunning area of National Trust-managed land.
